The Clarke Central High School Media Center has a quote from CCHS’ class of 2004’s valedictorian Eve Carson featured. Carson was a member of the soccer team and the student class president. “When such a young life touches so many in such a powerful way, it is at the same time a reflection of the community that raised her into these values,” CCHS girls head soccer coach Chris Hulse said in an email to the CCHS staff. The Clarke Central High School girls soccer program honors Eve Carson at their annual Eve Carson Memorial Night on March 17.
Eve Carson was a member of the Clarke Central High School soccer team, served as student body president and ended her high school career as valedictorian for the CCHS class of 2004.
Carson then continued her education at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where she went on to become a political science and biology major with hopes of attending medical school post-college. Carson was elected UNC’s student body president in 2007 and was a recipient of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and a North Carolina Fellow, a four-year leadership development program.
However, on March 5, 2008 Eve’s life was taken.
“I know it has been years, but Eve was a truly remarkable young woman. There are common descriptors when you speak to those who knew her as a dear friend, those who taught her as an exceptional student, and so many souls she touched in between,” CCHS girls head soccer coach Chris Hulse said in an email to the CCHS staff. “Talk to anyone who knew Eve Carson and you will universally hear words such as compassionate, inclusive, kind, generous and brilliant.”
As a remembrance of her impact, the CCHS girls varsity soccer team will celebrate the life and legacy of Eve with their annual Eve Carson Memorial Night. The event will be hosted on today in Billy Henderson Stadium with kickoff at 5:30 p.m.
“It’s just a night to remember Eve Carson because she was such an important figure here at Clarke Central,” CCHS senior and varsity girls soccer team captain Nicolina Boza said. “She played soccer and then she went onto UNC and did some amazing things there and she was just one of those people that when she walked into the room she just loved everybody.”
The CCHS girls varsity soccer team uses this game as a night of reflection to honor and remember Eve. According to Boza, the team plays with extra motivation for this game.
“We definitely play harder. I know last year we went into this game playing a lot harder, definitely playing for her, and we ended up winning which was really big for us, like we loved that we did that especially because it was that night,” Boza said.
Hulse requests those attending the game wear “Carolina Blue” instead of red and gold to have the community come together and honor Eve’s life.
“We hope you join us and proudly wear Carolina Blue in honor of a young woman whose actions and voice still echo throughout our community,” Hulse said.
