Coach Dinah Posey spoke about her experience at Clarke Central High School and her life after retirement. She has worked at CCHS since the 1992-93 school year and will be retiring in May. “It’s probably going to be a little sad because this is what I have done for so long,” Posey said. “But, I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter and challenge in my life.” Photo by Karla Dougan.

Varsity golf coach and physical education department chair Dinah Posey will be retiring from Clarke Central High School in May. She will be taking a part time job at Foothills Education Charter High School beginning in the 2015-16 school year.
After serving over two decades at Clarke Central High School as a Health and Physical Education instructor, Coach Dinah Posey will be retiring in May.
Posey is currently the head coach of the golf team, and has also served as a basketball, softball, track and volleyball coach. Before coming to CCHS, Posey worked at other schools in Georgia.
“I came from Wheeler High School in Marietta. I also previously taught at Coffee County High School,” Posey said. “Athens is my home and I came back to move closer to my family number one and Billy Henderson and Dr. Willis was the principal and they contacted me and I welcomed the opportunity to come to Clarke Central to teach and coach.”
Athletic Director Dr. Jonathan Ward and Principal Dr. Robbie Hooker will make the decision on who to hire to fill her position.
“Coach Posey has served as the assistant athletic director for fall sports,” Ward said. “I will appoint an individual in our athletic program that has the experience and ability to assist with the athletic administrative duties during the fall sports season.”
Junior and varsity golf team member Marci Woods believes Posey has taught her golf team how to be better players and how to be better people.
“Coach Posey taught me everything I need to know about golf. From how to swing the club to staying focus on the ball to hit,” Woods said. “She also taught me that there is more than just winning a golf match but to have fun while you’re playing.”
Posey has served as the golf coach for 18 years.
“I think (the golf team) will be just fine when I leave. I am going to miss them, but I’m gonna still be in Athens,” Posey said. “I will be close and when I can I will probably get out to see them next spring.”
Posey will be taking a part time job as one of the site directors for Foothills Charter School that will open August 2015. Foothills is a school that gives students an opportunity to get a high school diploma.
“I really think that we can touch a lot of kids and provide support where they have given up along the way but maybe we can give them some hope and get them a high school diploma,” Posey said.
Throughout the years, Posey has overcome many challenges while working at CCHS such as being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. With the help of her co-workers she fought through it. She appreciates her job and is grateful for the opportunity to work with students and staff.
“I am going to miss my department because we’re a really tight group. We do anything for each other,” Posey said. “I am going to miss the entire faculty and administration. The students, my athletes of course. Just the diversity and the love and the family here.”
