Southerners enjoy the power of the oral tradition and the magic of nature in “Tales from the Wild,” a storytelling event hosted by the Institute of Wild Intelligence in Athens.
For teens when life is moving fast it’s easy to get lost in the chaos, especially without any direct outlets for self-expression. Storytelling opens the door towards expressing those feelings with others, and at the Institute of Wild Intelligence in Athens, the practice of storytelling is regarded as a powerful teaching tool. On Sun., March 29 the leaders of Wild Intelligence will share that power with the Athens community in “Tales from the Wild,” an afternoon celebrating nature, storytelling and the coexistence of the two.
“Teens can learn from (nature) and it will help you know yourself and where you are heading,” Executive director of Wild Intelligence Sarah Hubbard said. “Every great adventure has a story and many of our greatest adventures happen when we are young teens. Why not write your story in nature, a place that accepts you just for who you are?”
Storytellers of the day will include Hubbard, Ann Turner, and Southern Order of Storytellers member Tommy Tye. They will share a variety of folktales and myths, as well as stories about personal experiences of inspiration and adventure. There will also be interactive story opportunities for guests, games and more.
“Some of the stories will be filled with mystery and keep you on the edge of your seat. Other stories we will tell we’ve learned because we love them and what we learn from them,” Hubbard said.
The event will take place in the Gardenside Room at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
