Construction on the new media center will begin in Spring of 2015. The addition is planned to be erected in the space that formerly connected the main building and the West Wing.
“The new media center is part of the old building we tore down. Where the old elevator is, all that has to come down. We’ll be building back a three-story media center,” SPLOST Project Manager Joe Dunagan said.
CCHS media specialists Lindy Weaver and Kacy Tedder had the opportunity to provide input for the new space. Based on that feedback, the total square footage of the new building will be the same as the current space. However, the main space will feel larger; the Classics and Non-Fiction sections will no longer be separate rooms.
“(We) sat with architects and sent lists and photographs and things that we liked and ideas that we had, and they would draw (from that),” Weaver said.
The new media center will have a focus on mobility and modern technology. Furniture will be equipped with electrical outlets and there will be portable glass classrooms. Additionally, traditional checkout is set to change.
“There’s no circulation desk, which is something we felt pretty strongly about because we didn’t want to be tied to the desk,” Weaver said.
The construction is scheduled to be finished by August 2015 for the 2015-16 school year.
