On March 22, the Clarke Central High School chess club competed in the Georgia High School Chess Championship at Emory University in Atlanta. The tournament was sponsored by the Georgia Chess Association, a non-profit organization that focuses on fostering and supporting the chess community in Georgia.
The team placed 16th out of the 28 teams that competed in the tournament, an impressive place considering that it was the team’s first time competing in the competition.
“Overall, the guys did really well, but as a team they did not ‘score’ as highly as other teams. There is a huge list of reasons for the scoring, but it is way too complicated,” social studies department teacher and Chess Club adivser, David Cleaveland said. “Next year will be much better I hope, but they had a great time.”
The team consisted of seniors Mohammed Burjak and Jesus Ramirez, junior Aswin Sabu, sophomore Denny Mannakulathil and freshmen Charlie White and Zach Meyers.
“It was exciting, I enjoyed it,” Ramirez said. “We got to bond together as a team and I think the team will do much better next year.”
