Directed by Harald Zwart, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones offers a magical world filled with demon-slaying action along with a side of humor.
This movie is based on the tale of a young girl named Clary Fray. One day, she wakes up only to find mysterious symbols drawn and hung all around her bedroom. Not knowing what it means, she starts seeking answers. Little does she know, doing this will unravel secrets that no normal human, or mundane, would ever learn. Clary would soon learn that stories about monsters are all true, and that she and her loved ones are not safe.
Being a movie adaptation of a bestselling book revered by many young adults, City of Bones does not fail to meet expectations. The morbid fantasy genre is effectively represented by the abundance of magic and witchcraft while maintaining a modern aspect. It also flourishes with creatures such as demons, vampires and werewolves.
Often, one will find themselves going from the feeling of suspense to enjoying an action-packed fight against evil. Although City of Bones has a dark and serious atmosphere, this movie offers romantic scenes and sometimes a touch of humor. However, this movie tends to play with a lot of predictable plot twists, which can ruin the mystery and suspense of the story.
Overall, City of Bones is a distinct movie. It easily catches the attention of a diverse group of people with its dark, yet magical setting in a modern day society. It is not what one would expect on a daily basis. Moviegoers who crave for fantasy, romance, suspense and hard-core action should definitely go and see City of Bones.
