West-Coast rapper Tyga released his fourth album Hotel California on April 9. The album consists of 18 tracks with special appearances from acclaimed rappers and R&B artists such as Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and 2 Chainz.
Despite all of the acclaimed contributing artists featured in Hotel California, the album itself is utterly ordinary. Most of the songs on the album, are just another rap song about sex, alcohol, drugs, money and other material things. It seems as if the only thing that Tyga likes more than money is molly (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine also known as MDMA), hip-hop’s latest drug. However, Tyga may have ended the trend of rapping about molly, by beating it to death, mentioning it 19 times in his song aptly named “Molly”.
Tyga’s previous album, Careless World: The Rise Of The Last King that was released 2012 still has the typical rap lyrics, except unlike Hotel California it still had an originality about it. The beats were fresh, entertaining and not stale and dull like the his recent album.
The only two songs on Hotel California, worth any positive mention are “Diss Song” and “Dad’s Letter”. In “Diss Song”, Tyga raps about his past and recognizes where he comes from and he unleashes his cutting lyrics about the absence of his father in “Dad’s Letter”. Besides “Dad’s Letter” and “Diss Song”, the rest of the record is a collection of forgettable lyrics and beats.
Hotel California may have a few decent tracks, but overall it is just another rap album, full of materialistic ideals highlighted in tracks such as “Get Rich” and “Get Loose”. The album blends together into one big clump, the best part of the album is when a featured artist is singing or rapping.
