Clarke Central High School defensive coordinator Ahren Self has been promoted to head football coach.
On Feb. 15 during Advisement, football players for the 2013-14 school year were called down to the Team Meeting room, formerly known as the Auxiliary Weight Room, for the second time this week.
It was announced today that Clarke Central High School defensive coordinator Ahren Self would be promoted to the head football coaching position.
Previously, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, Clarke Central High School Athletic Director Dr. Jon Ward announced to the team that head football coach Leroy Ryals would leave CCHS to become the head football coach and athletic director at Thomasville High School in Thomasville, Ga.
At the Feb. 15 meeting, defensive coordinator Ahren Self was announced as the new head football coach, a decision made by Ward and Principal Dr. Robbie P. Hooker.
Self was approached by Ryals and asked to work with him as the defensive coordinator at THS. However, Self was determined to stay at CCHS.
“Seniors, I want to come back for you guys, and have a chance to do something special. I want to get back on a winning record,” Self said at the meeting. “I have an emotional attachment to the team. We have a chance to do something very special.”
After ending the 2012 season with a 5-6 record, Self said that his biggest goal for the 2013 season is to get back on a winning track and work towards the goal of competing for the AAAAA State Championship at the Georgia Dome next December.
“I really feel good, he’s just bringing everything back to this Clarke Central football program and it’s just bringing our spirits back up and making us believe now. So, it’s a big difference. Now we got to move on and keep this train moving and keep on what we do,” junior running back Kavon Williams said.
