“Those who dance are considered insane by those who can’t hear the music.”
– George Carlin
A dozen Clarke Central High School students, guided by faculty sponsor Laverne Fortson, seek approval of a school dance line for 2013-14 football season.
Due to past inappropriate behavior, the dance line was disbanded after the 2009 season. However, CCHS Principal Dr. Robbie P. Hooker is open to revisiting such a team.
“I would have to look into the purpose, as you know some of the programs in the past have embarrassed the school when they went out,” Hooker said.
This is a reasonable question by any stretch of the imagination.
A dance line will mentor girls and help them gain confidence. Dance lines give girls the chance to be part of a team and to show rhythm through body movement. Dance also offers a form of artistic expression, as it is the poetic baring of the soul through motion.
Additionally, a dance line will build lifelong bonds of friendship. It also teaches discipline as dancers have to learn routines. Dancers will also gain leadership skills, as the girls will have to work together for a common goal – to be the best performers possible at each game.
A dance line at CCHS would boost the enjoyment of the games. As it stands right now, fans often come to the games to walk around and socialize. With a dance line, fans would be entertained by lively performances instead of texting during dull moments.
Meetings have been held between Hooker and CCHS fine arts department teacher Dr. Robert Lawrence regarding the reinstatement of a dance line. However, Lawrence is still unsure about its return.
“I will think about the dance line, it’s not a no but it’s not a yes either,” Lawrence said
After discussions among the adults about its return, perhaps the insanity will end and we’ll all get to hear the music again.
