Clarke Central High School senior Carver Goodhue has been announced as the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition student. Goodhue scored the highest score on the Scholastic Amplitude Test in the class of 2013 in a single seating and is in the top 10 percent of his class.
“I was very surprised and excited (when I found out I was the STAR student),” Goodhue said. “It is also nice because my sister was also the STAR student, so there is a sense of continuity throughout the generations.”
Goodhue is an active student and is involved with various extracurriculars including cross country, wresting and the National Honor Society. Goodhue also participated in a foreign exchange program in Spain during his junior year.
The STAR award also recognizes a Clarke County School District teacher who has influenced the STAR student. Goodhue chose International Baccalaureate/Gifted Collaborator Meri Blackburn, formerly his Spanish teacher as the STAR teacher. Goodhue recognizes Blackburn as someone who has been there for him throughout his high school career.
“Ms. Blackburn is a great teacher, we have remained close and she has been someone that I have been able to go and talk to. She was also very supportive of my decision to go to Spain.” Goodhue said. “Honestly, it’s been an opportunity to thank Ms. Blackburn, an invaluable aid to me at Clarke Central.”
Blackburn believes Goodhue has a strong passion and drive to learn Spanish. She first saw this passion when Goodhue was a freshman.
“Carver is an extremely dedicated student and he has a brilliant mind for language. There is this passion for Spanish that some students have, and Carver has this passion. He is just an extremely gifted kid,” Blackburn said.
Goodhue is excited to go and compete for the regional STAR student title.
